Disaster prevention

Disaster prevention measures

Development of disaster prevention measures

Prevention of damage from natural disasters is always more important than restoration. This is why KORAIL has been actively implementing yearly plans for fundamental resolution to relevant risks such as flood-prone facilities since 2000.

Detailed implementation plans

  • Expansion of bridges with small flow cross-section and bottle-neck issues
  • Reinforcement of the foundations of bridges with scouring issues
  • Construction of drains and retaining walls in areas with the risk of flood, track burying, and bank collapse
  • Construction of facilities to prevent landslides and barbed wire fences to protect against falling stones
  • Establishment and operation of a disaster prevention office

Track Maintenance

Thawing season (March 1 ~ May 31)

  • Elimination of the risks of falling stones and assigning of safety observers
  • Re-designation of the areas where continuous welded rails should be constructed
  • Repair works on loosened tracks (e.g., softened ground)

Summer season (June 1 ~ September 30)

  • Preventive works against floods
  • Preventive works against rail track distortion

Winter season (October 1 ~ February 28)

  • Preventive works against rail breaks and preparation of materials for emergency restoration
  • Preventive works in freezing-prone areas and preparation of materials for emergency restoration
  • Preparation of snow clearing equipment and materials
