High-speed Railway with advanced technology

On-board computer system

    Effective control of HSR
The HSR, which incorporates a variety of state-of-the-art technologies, is controlled by the on-board computer system. The on-board computer system consists of computers installed in the KTX, ancillary devices, a network transmission system that connects multiple computers with one another, the serial links that connect computers with ancillary devices, and the input/output control lines used for checking the status of a train and giving commands in/out of the train
What the on-board computer system does
Check on the status of a train and issuance/control of commands for train operation Assistance on train driving and provision of information on train repair Provision on information on train failures and repair for maintainers Assistance for train crew to prepare for train operation and provision of wireless data transmission interface passenger (for remote control and service maintenance) Check on the functions of passenger amenities, and notification of breakdowns to train crew

Catenary thawing system

  • Catenary thawing system image
Based on the operating principle of an electric heater
When there is no train operation in the winter, catenaries are often be covered by snow and ice. If this happens, when the first train the next day runs, there might be a contact failure between the catenary and the pantograph, which can compromise the pantograph’s current collection and damage electric devices on the ground. To prevent this, the catenary thawing system generates heat from electric resistance in the same way that an electric heater works, thawing the ice and snow on the catenary and safely supplying electricity to the train.

Articulated bogie

    Moving freely like human joints
A bogie is a driving system of a train. High-speed trains use the articulated bogies which move freely like human joints. Articulated bogies are light and quiet and offer a comfortable ride. Also, even in the event of train derailment, the risk of damage to train cars is lower because the entire wheel is structured as one piece.

Other state-of-the-art technologies

Other technologies incorporated in KORAIL’S high-speed trains include Automatic Train Control (ATC), Interlocking System (IXL), Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), Trunked Radio System (TRS), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), and Error Code Wireless Transmission System.
